Mexico 2021 – The solidarity adventure
Hello from Mexico! During the next weeks I will be here telling you about my adventures in this fascinating place, where I’ve been lucky enough to arrive for a four weeks collaboration with Projects Abroad and the Pro México NGO.
The story of how I got to get here begins in the middle of the pandemic, with a neighborhood-app, a search-ad and a message: I need to learn Spanish before November. Shall I answer? Let’s do. I’m from Spain, shall we meet? And so did we. To speak Spanish. About a project. In Mexico. That’s how I met Barbara, the woman with whom I would never have had an Ingwertee souldn’t the virtual world have allowed. And we met. And when we did, I saw something in her that I know it’s within myself too. Something I hadn’t found yet. And we started talking. And sharing. And suddenly the stars were lining up in my head. What if I went there to work in my mother language? Just to help other women who may suffer from other realities? Certainly a sensible utilization of my frozen overtime hours… And I decided that I wanted to go with her. We could even celebrate the Día de muertos together. A dream was born.
Since years I’ve wanted to travel with the kids to a place that shows us another reality, because «these children have everything and do not value anything». If we are honest, this is true. At least partly true. But between the family changes and the pandemic there had been no proper occasion. The day I met Barbara, I understood that I was the one who needed to know other realities. Those Peruvian multi-colour flip-flops that she was proudly wearing while I was freezing in my boots, walking in the park. And she sent me the page. And I got in. And here we are.
It has been a few years since my blog «California 2017» and life has literally turned the bell four times. This is not Silicon Valley either, but Guadalajara, a city of almost 6 million inhabitants on the other side of the globe where the need for basic resources in some places definitely exceeds the technological greed. I don’t know what will find me here, but I do know that this blog will talk about another world, in another phase and with another purpose. Only the curiosity to observe and share interesting anecdotes or realities, harsh or not, is exactly the same.
Thanks to all those who, consciously or not, have inspired me to undertake this adventure: to Barbara, for putting herself in my way and fascinating me with her projects; to my parents, for giving me more love than courage; to my children, for kindly giving up on watching soccer games with their mother for a month; to their father, for being generous, even now, and taking care; to my boss, for telling me „mach das“; to my faithful friends, for listening to me and giving me so many ideas, and to my brave friends, for having undertaken their own transformative journeys; to my brothers and sisters-in-law, for not having done anything to stop me; to Los Javis, for the seed of «Chase Your Dreams» they let fall with me; to Carsten, for buying the flight for me with his offer; and to all others I’m not mentioning, because you, all, inspire me.
And thanks to myself, what the hell! To the little girl in me, for daring, and to the older one, for letting her do.
And to my therapist, of course…

Let’s see what comes out now, after such an introduction.

Heute war mein persönlicher Höhepunkt des gesamten mexikanischen Abenteuers: Tortear mit Gloria!
